What is multicultural education?
It supports all cultures of the students and families in the
classroom. This is a great way for students to learn about their peers. According
to Multicultural Education in a Pluralistic Society “Multicultural education
construct students’ cultures are integrated into the curriculum, instruction,
and classroom and school environment”.
What is the teachers’ responsibility when it comes to multicultural
in the classroom?
The teacher’s responsibility is to be aware of their student’s
cultures by visiting churches communities and by studying or searching online
or read articles about other ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, and religious
groups. A teacher can make a difference by pushing himself or herself learning
about others other than themselves. A
teacher needs ensure their students are learning about the significance of
multiculturalism. A teacher can provide books reflecting their students that can
contribute into a positive outcome for them. Teachers need to care and
encourage their students because it leads to an academic achievement to each student
because their learning about their own culture and their peers. According to Mathew Lynch “Interviews with
family members, assignments asking students to write about learning experiences
that occur outside of school, and assignments involving family stories and
traditions all can play a significant role in unearthing information about a
students’ cultural heritage”.
What is the school’s responsibility when it comes to
multicultural in the classroom?
The schools’ responsibility is also reflecting multicultural
by having extracurricular activities with different culture, this can make
students feel encouraged and feel in place. Schools should have wallpapers with
different cultures on the walls. The school should schedule meetings with all
the staff to create ideas on making the school more multicultural. The school
should be responsible on having after school programs about different cultures.
Most important of all respect their students and their parent’s beliefs.
What are the legal ramifications?
The school and the teacher should require the NCLB because it
requires all students from different cultures to have academic achievement
regardless of their socioeconomic. The Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act is to meet the students’ needs for instance, require students with
disabilities to provide instructional strategies to produce student outcome. Title IX of the Education of public law means
legislation enacted regarding gender equity in the United States. Require social justice is for believing in students and have
high expectations to meet their potential. The teacher and the school should make sure all in their power
to protect every student.
How can a teacher balance multiculturalism and a parent’s
beliefs?
In the meet the teacher night, I will present myself and discuss
with my student’s parents about multicultural education and what outcome can
come to it. Throughout the year I will send out with my students documents and
little surveys to the parents about if they are 100% comfortable for me to discuss
to their children about the global society. I will always involve parents with
child’s education. When I was little my mother was in the religion called Jehovah
Witness, I couldn’t celebrate with my peers because it was against my religion.
If there was student similar with my previous religion I will always respect
it.
How has your idea of what “special population” means changed?
Why? What do you think?
No, it has never changed. Just opened my point of view more
on special populations in specific details. For instance, I always thought that
special populations were about students with disabilities and health disabilities.
Now I truly know what other group falls into the category of special
populations such as, Gifted and talented students. ESL and ELL students, low socioeconomic,
and LGBTQ students.
One lesson plan of kindergarten in reading from the TEKS.
My desire grade in teaching is kindergarten and the subject I
chose is Reading and Comprehension Skills. My lesson plan from the tea Texas is
19 TAC 110.10(b). The book I chose is called
I’m like you, your like me by Cindy Gainer, the book is about understanding
and appreciating each other. First, I will read the tittle and ask my students
what they think the book is going to be about. Second, I will start reading and
stop on every second page and ask again what is happening in the book and ask
them about the plot of the book because in the book the kids in the story are
in the school playground and outside the school campus. so, they can get the idea
of appreciating each other inside and outside the school, regardless of how
different we look. Third, I will discuss my students on how the kids in the
book appreciated and understood each other. And them ask them about their family’s
culture. Lastly, I will hand out a assignment of which part of the book did
they like, so it can give an idea if they understood it clearly.
What are some characteristics of exceptional learners?
According to Gollnick and Chinn” Exceptional children is an
inclusive term that refers to children with learning and/or behavior problems,
children with physical disabilities or sensor impairments, and children who are
intellectually gifted or have special talent”. Students with physical
disabilities and Sensory impairments can’t hear, blind or can’t walk, which
have a difficult problem to learn, but some students are also gifted. Students
have the right to have the freedom to grow to gain independence. In the other hand
gifted students learn quickly than others. Some schools don’t have special gifted
classes, so the teacher has to equity education because not all students are
not the same.
What are some characteristics of diverse learner?
Some of the characteristics of diverse learners are students
who are in the lower socioeconomic status. one-third of our black and Hispanic children are being raised in
poverty. Some of the students’ parents who fall in the category work a
lot and don’t have the support of their parents. It is very important to
encourage and have high expectations to those students and provide a safe
environment classroom. English language learners are students who don’t speak or
write in English. These students attend to ESL or ELL classes to get the language
skills they need. Culturally and linguistically diverse students receive low
instruction because they are usually placed in the lower level reading groups
or sent out of the classroom for remedial instruction. Again, therefore
equity education is important to provide to all student to success.
Why does any of this
matter?
There is not question
about it. Multicultural education can make a difference because to knowledge
about other than yourself can have a positive outcome and understand their
culture. Children can work together and fight racism, sexism, and other
discrimination in school and outside. That is making difference in today’s
youth. A student can feel encourage and
support by believing in students that they can academic achieve. Most of all
teachers should care about their students no matter if they are different from
them.
